John H. Dent letterbook, 1813-1814.

Correspondence of Commodore John H. Dent documenting his allocation of scarce ships and manpower to insure protection of the lower south Atlantic coast; the difficulties commonly encountered by the U.S. Navy, such as desertion, recruiting shortages, ship construction and repairs; skirmishes with both British ships and privateers; and the conflicting demands Dent had to resolve the expectations of superiors in Washington and those of local Carolina authorities. Correspondents include Secretary of the Navy William Jones; Commodore Hugh G. Campbell, commanding naval officer at St. Mary's, Ga.; Lt. T.N. Gautier, commander of the U.S. Naval flotilla at Wilmington, N.C.; and various navy and army officers, including William Joyner, James Mork, Lawrence Kearney, Charles E. Crowley, and Edmund P. Kennedy, and Col. William Drayton. Places referenced include Beaufort, Charleston, and Georgetown, S.C., Savannah, Ga., and Washington, D.C.
